Scunthorpe United have extended the loan spell of defender Cliff Byrne from League One side Oldham Athletic until December 22nd.

The 31-year-old Irishman, joined The Iron from Oldham back in September and has since made five appearances for Brian Laws’ men. Laws told the club’s official website: “For Cliff that recent postponement against York City has come as a blessing for him.

“I would not say it did for us but it allowed us to extend his loan and he is absolutely delighted.

“That will give us the opportunity to extend his current deal by a further two weeks.

“We have taken advantage of the system and the fact we did not have a game over that weekend which has allowed us to do that.

“It was a deal that suited both parties.”

Byrne has previously been on the books at Sunderland and spent nearly 10 years with Scunthorpe before he was released by the club in May 2012. He signed for Oldham on 27th July 2012, and has also featured for Oldham on three occasions this season.
