Canvey Island Sign Top Scorer John Sands
Canvey Island have announced the signing of centre forward John Sands for an undisclosed fee from Ryman League Premier Division rivals Bury Town.
Sands was the top goalscorer in the division last season after scoring 27 league goals and 33 in all competitions, and has notched an impressive 59 total goals in his 109 appearances for the Blues with seven of them coming already this season.
John came through the ranks with Cambridge United before joining Mildenhall Town and joined Bury Town in in October 2011 where he has enjoyed great success. Sands handed in a written transfer request on Monday, prompting a bid from Canvey that has now been accepted.
Bury chairman Russell Ward told buryfreepress.co.uk: “We are disappointed that John has chosen to go to a club at the same level and a club below us in the league, but that’s his choice.
“The money side is obviously important to him, but we wish him all the best.”
Sands will not be eligible for any FA Cup and FA Trophy ties this season after already playing in the competitions for Bury Town.
Canvey manager Danny Heale told canveyislandfc.com: “I’m delighted that John has agreed to join the club, and in my opinion we now have the best striker in the league which will be a massive boost for us.
